How to Install a 250mm Cooling Fan Safely

Updated 7 October 2026 · Independent guide by CoolFanSG. Not a hands-on test.

This is a general checklist for hobby and workshop use, not professional electrical advice. If you are unsure, ask a qualified person.

Before you start

  • Unplug and disconnect everything before handling the fan or cables.
  • Inspect the fan, guard and cables for damage.
  • Read the label on the power unit: input, output and current.

Choose the position

  • Pick a flat, solid surface or a bracket that can take the weight and the vibration.
  • Keep blades and guard clear of cables, curtains and loose items.
  • Leave room for air to enter and leave.
  • Place the fan so people cannot easily touch the blades through the guard.

Mount it

  • Use screws or fixings suited to the surface. Do not overtighten plastic parts.
  • Add rubber washers or pads if vibration or noise is a concern.
  • Secure the fan so that it cannot fall if knocked.

Power unit and cables

  • Keep the power unit off the floor, dry and ventilated.
  • Do not cover it or leave it where it can be splashed.
  • Route cables so they do not run across walkways, and avoid sharp bends.
  • Use the controller as supplied. Do not alter the wiring.

Test

Set the controller to its lowest setting, plug in, and raise the speed slowly. Listen for rubbing or rattling, and check that the fan is stable. Stop and unplug if you notice smells, heat, sparks or noise.
